During my time at Oxbow School of Art I sourced native plants of Saugatuck, Michigan to produce natural dye and ink. Variations of pink, orange, and brown are the palette of the sassafras tree (bark, leaves, and root) and variations of yellow and green come from the milkweed plant (blossoms, leaves, and stem). Thank you to Krista Franklin and Ayanah Moor for teaching Black in the Woods: Representation and the Pastoral, Issac Logsdon for being my science partner when I needed guidance, Antara Morfe for superb modeling , and all my fellow artists' words of encouragement and steadfast creativity during these two weeks.
Materials: Milkweed plant, sassafras tree, Russian sage, needle stonecrop, turmeric, unidentified wildflowers, stonehenge paper, gampi, kitikata, graphite, conte, bonfire charcoal, thread, clothes pins, a camera phone, patience, and magic.
